My approach to Counselling

My approach, clients have said, is 'human' personable, relatable, warm, enlightening...and more. Working from an integrative angle allows me to use what we deem sensible in the moment to get the best outcome, this gives great flexibility in the changing circumstances clients face.

Talking therapy aims first and foremost to build a solid dependable relationship from which we can work. Clients report feeling better in relationships, more confident in communication, less worrying and feeling sad, thinking sharper, being more content and less anxious amongst other things.

Here is an overview explaining how the some of the approaches work.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a practical approach to therapy that focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It's like putting on a detective hat to investigate how these elements interact and influence your overall well-being.

We'll work together to identify patterns in your thinking and behaviour that might be contributing to your difficulties. By understanding these patterns, we can challenge unhelpful thought processes and develop new strategies to manage challenges more effectively.

It's important to note that CBT is a collaborative process. I'll provide guidance and tools, but you're the expert on your own experience. Together, we'll work towards building your resilience and equipping you with the skills to navigate life's ups and downs.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy is like exploring the hidden depths of your mind. It's about understanding how past experiences, often ones we're not fully aware of, shape our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours today.

Think of it like an archaeologist uncovering buried treasures. We'll work together to explore patterns in your relationships, emotions, and how you relate to the world. By understanding these patterns, we can gain insights into how past experiences might be influencing your current challenges.

It's a journey of self-discovery, where we'll look at the ways your unconscious mind might be impacting your life. It's a process that can be both challenging and rewarding, as it offers the potential for significant growth and change.

Person-centered Therapy

Person-centered therapy is like having a trusted companion on your journey of self-discovery. I believe that you have the inner resources and capacity for growth and healing. My role is to create a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences without judgment.

Unlike other approaches where I might suggest or encourage, my focus is on understanding and reflecting back what you're sharing. By providing a genuine, empathetic, and accepting presence, I aim to help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself and find your own path forward.

Ultimately, the direction of therapy is in your hands. I'm here to support you as you uncover your strengths, address challenges, and work towards a more fulfilling life.

What does an integrative therapist do to help their client?

Imagine therapy as a toolbox filled with different tools. As an integrative therapist, I have a wide range of these tools at my disposal. Instead of sticking to just one, I carefully select the ones that best fit your unique needs and challenges.

It's like putting together a personalised puzzle. I'll consider your past experiences, current difficulties, and personal goals to create a tailored approach. We might explore deep-rooted patterns from a psychodynamic perspective, challenge unhelpful thinking with cognitive-behavioural techniques, or focus on building emotional awareness through person-centered therapy.

The key is flexibility. As our work together progresses, I might introduce new tools or adjust our focus based on what's working and what isn't. The goal is to equip you with the skills and understanding you need to overcome obstacles and build a more fulfilling life.
